Man feeds exclusively on raw meat – but is this diet safe for humans?

The human body uses incredible mechanisms to absorb almost anything that our bodies need to be viable in a healthy way from the foods and drinks we consume as part of our diet. For these reasons, nutritionists recommend that people should eat a varied diet.

In 2013, the story was told on the Internet about a young man who had eaten “nothing but raw meat” for five years. Since the original story was released,  Derek Nance was revisited to see if he’s still happy and healthy eating nothing but raw meat.

The man who only eats meat: The American Derek Nance.

The story originally written by Julian Morgans raised many questions about the safety of the unusual diet. Typically, the consumption of raw meat is associated with a high risk of being able to catch food poisoning. Pathogens or parasites, the most common being salmonella, are found in the animals we consume and that can infect us if they are not cooked enough or eaten raw before eating.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, poisoned food in 2010 caused approximately 582 million cases out of 22 diet-related illnesses. These cases resulted in an estimated 351 deaths.

For more than 7 years, Derek has been eating only raw meat, showing his corpulent body as a sign of his health.

Regardless of the risks of food poisoning, however, the question arises as to whether the human body can even stay healthy in this unappetizing type of diet where it gets nothing but raw meat. Nance began dieting with raw meat to relieve the symptoms of a puzzling stomach ailment, Vice reports. Since he had adopted this diet about eight years ago, his symptoms have subsided.

The human body uses incredible mechanisms to absorb almost anything that our bodies need to be viable in a healthy way from the foods and drinks we consume as part of our diet. For these reasons, nutritionists recommend that people should eat a varied diet.

“A key requirement for a healthy diet is the variety and choice of foods. This is because of the trace minerals – vitamins and minerals – that are found in a variety of foods in very small quantities, “said Dr. Beth Mayer-Davis, chairman of the Department of Nutrition at the University of North Carolina told The Guardian when she talked about Nance’s diet.

Out of curiosity about whether he got the vitamins and minerals he needed to maintain his health, he meat-obsessed man was asked how he got his regular dose of vitamin C. He said, “The innards of animals contain vitamin C,” so he does not need any additional supplements to his meat-based diet.

However, despite its claim, nutritionists have pointed out that a diet made of nothing but raw meat triggers a lack of other important minerals and vitamins in Nance. “Fiber, for example, is a nutrient-dense substance that, in the context of a more typical diet, performs a vital function within the abdomen and health. That would be [in any meat-rich diet] to consider, “Dr. Mayer-Davis opposite The Guardian.

Finally, it is also important to ask how well the human body processes the excess fat and protein that is digested as part of that diet. Our body uses protein to build and repair tissues as well as to produce enzymes, hormones and other endogenous chemicals. In the meantime, the saturated fat that the meat provides to our body is used as an energy source that our body can store for later.

However, while proteins and fats are needed as part of a healthy diet, too much of it can be detrimental to our health and well-being. For example, excess protein and fat can cause heart disease, which is the leading cause of death for both men and women, according to the American College of Cardiology in the United States.

Nance feeds mainly on lamb, which comes from animals that he slaughters and freezes at home. Nance avoids swine, as the animals are often pumped full of hormones and fed with grain, which promotes the proliferation of bacteria.

While the health effects of hormones in animal products have been under-researched, the use of antibiotics is widely recognized as a potential threat to human health. According to a report, over 70% of antibiotics that are of medical importance to humans are also used in animals in the US. The report concluded that the use of high levels of antibiotics in food production caused drug-resistant strains to be transmitted both to humans and the environment, and suggested that the number of antibiotics used in agriculture drastically reduced should be.

Since the original publication of the article, Derek Nance has been at the center of numerous documentaries, including A Million Ways to Live. Nance feels healthy and happy with his all-raw meat diet and lives on a Kentucky farm with his four children and his vegetarian girlfriend.
